Samara Villa

Two-bedroom Samara Villa, 210m² build: a flat-roofed villa with a white rendered exterior and floor-to-ceiling black-framed glass. The shell is hard-edged, and the warmth comes from timber built into it: slatted ceilings and wall panels, a timber pergola and a timber-beamed garden pavilion. Vines trail from the roof edges, and a lotus pond with an urn fountain sits beside the dining table.

Samara is a single-storey Modern Tropical house set in a generous garden plot in Bali, raised on a grey stone plinth above the lawn. A wide flight of stone steps climbs to the terrace on one side, and on the other the pool is lifted to the same level, its tiled wall facing the grass.

Beside the pool, a separate pavilion of rendered concrete with timber beams and a ceiling fan holds a sofa sunk into the floor, so the seating sits low among the banana plants. Nearby, under a frangipani, a kitchenette with a breakfast bar and rattan stools opens onto a planted courtyard.

In the two bedrooms, upholstered beds stand against slatted timber walls lit from behind, and a desk nook elsewhere has two wishbone chairs under a window with blinds. One bathroom has a walk-in shower in green herringbone tile; another puts a freestanding tub in front of a tall slatted screen. The outdoor shower is set against a fish-scale tiled wall over a floor of pebbles and herringbone tile.
