Casa Barde

Four-bedroom Casa Barde in a Tropical Rustic palette: brown, beige, grey, with heavy use of natural timber. Modern lines on the architecture; the warmth comes from the finishes and furniture rather than the shapes. 350m² build, 2023.

One long, steep gable covers the whole of Casa Barde, a four-bedroom villa design for Bali. Under it, a dark timber frame divides the elevation into bays: glass and sheer curtains fill them upstairs, and the ground floor opens to the garden on sliding walls. The Tropical Rustic palette shows up in stained timber and grey concrete.

The centre of the plan is a planted courtyard. A sunken lounge with deep grey seating drops below floor level, palms grow up into the double-height space, and woven pendants hang above. A timber stair climbs along one side. Next to it, the kitchen uses green subway tiles and a terrazzo-topped island, and opens onto a covered deck with a slatted timber pergola, a grill and a long dining table.

Beyond the deck, broad steps lead down into the pool, and a second sunken seating area sits at the water's edge. At the far end, a two-level pavilion lifts a lookout deck above the garden. The bathrooms mix concrete basins, black fittings and freestanding baths, with one wall in pink hexagonal tile and another in terrazzo. Bedrooms sit under exposed timber ceilings with pendant lamps.
