The Angsa Villas

Villa with a curved-profile roof on an elevated lot, oriented to catch the sunset over the surrounding land. The outside pairs the curves with rough natural stone and dense planting; inside, the same curve continues through the ceiling of the main living room. Single move, used hard.

Two one-bedroom villas share a steep, terraced hillside above the sea in Bali, and Balitecture designed both. Each is wrapped in vertical timber battens that follow the line of its wave-shaped roof. From the slope above you look down on the grey roof and, behind it, a white block with a planted green roof.

Under the curve, the Modern interior is largely open to the sea. A white kitchen island and a round dining table sit on a pale polished floor beside the lounge, and the ceiling is lined with split bamboo that bends with the roof. A short flight of steps leads up to the bedroom level, set behind white walls with a timber balustrade looking back over the kitchen.

In front of each villa, an infinity-edge pool tiled in green runs to a wall of dark rough-cut stone, with a small timber deck and loungers at either end. Paths and stone retaining walls step down the slope between the two houses toward the water, and higher up the grounds a thatched bale holds two padded beds behind white curtains.
