Villa Nakula 1

Four-bedroom Villa Nakula (the original of three iterations), 300m² build. Modern tropical idiom: off-form concrete walls offset by natural timber joinery, with white and soft beige carrying through every room. 2022.

Most of these photographs of Villa Nakula 1 were taken after dark, with the pool lit and the stone walls washed by wall lights. Balitecture designed this four-bedroom Modern Tropical villa in Bali, and it goes up rather than out: 300 m² of floor area on a 150 m² plot. A slim lap pool runs beside a wall of dark split stone, with a timber deck along its edge and a ground-floor bedroom opening straight onto it through black-framed sliding glass.

Across the water, a white frame holds a row of stone-clad fins with planting between them, lit from below. Planters with trailing vines run along the edges of the upper floors, and a terrace at the top has a round rattan daybed among potted palms behind a glass balustrade.

Inside, pitched ceilings of timber rafters and woven panels sit over the bedrooms and the dining room. Black four-poster beds stand against dark walls panelled in a diagonal pattern, softened by white linen and woven wall baskets. The kitchen has dark timber cabinetry and a pale concrete-look island with a slatted timber front, beside a long dining table with black woven chairs. One bathroom places a freestanding bath in a planted corner of pebbles and stone.
