Casita Alas

Two-bedroom casita in the Tropical Mediterranean idiom. Whitewashed walls, arched openings, alang-alang ceiling. Private plunge pool runs along the centre of the plan with both bedrooms opening onto it. 110m² build, completed 2023.

Casita Alas is a single-storey, two-bedroom casita designed around a covered terrace. A deep fringe of alang-alang thatch hangs from the eave, shading an outdoor kitchenette with timber fronts and open shelves, a timber dining table with benches and a long plaster seat against the wall. At the corner, an arched alcove holds a rattan hanging chair.

The plunge pool curves at its rendered edges, a low rendered walkway crosses it, and shallow steps lead in from the terrace. A curved white wall closes off the garden with a cushioned bench recessed into it, and an arched timber door is set into the boundary. Black steel glazing with curtains lines the terrace side of the house, and frangipani and palms fill the gaps.

The bedroom has a lit arched niche behind the bed with rattan pendants either side, and the bathroom puts a skylight over the shower, with stone-look tiles, round backlit mirrors and a floating white vanity. The Tropical Mediterranean plan covers 110 square metres on a 128 m² plot in Bali.
