About the Project

Tropical Brutalist
Design

House of Light stands out with its bold architectural lines, a mix of raw textures, and clean modern finishes that instantly catch the eye. The front facade blends sleek concrete, warm wood panels, and green accents, creating a balanced look that feels both contemporary and grounded in nature.

Drawn for a large plot in Bali, House of Light is a cluster of steep gables in white render, roofed in dark grey. At first-floor level a long planted ledge ties the volumes together and lets greenery hang over the terrace below. Timber battens screen the upper rooms, and piers of rough dark stone carry the overhangs. Facing the street, a grid of white breeze blocks stands beside a recessed entrance.

The living room rises a full two storeys. A band of clerestory glazing runs under the roof, and one side opens onto a glass-walled courtyard where a palm grows up through the house, so daylight arrives from above and from the middle of the plan. Patterned cement tiles cover the floor, and the kitchen is behind the glass with a timber-topped island on a dark stone base.

A long pool tiled in green mosaic runs along the garden side, with wide entry steps at one end and large boulders set at its edge. Upstairs, a timber deck under a slatted pergola and a thatched canopy has a raised plunge pool in the same green tile. The three bedrooms bring warmth to the Tropical Brutalist shell with timber ceilings and battened walls set around arched plaster niches, and the bathrooms are lined in dark stone with black vessel basins.
