Tropical Brutalist
River Edge Villa

About the Project
Tropical Brutalist
Design
This home uses a tropical brutalist design to create an eye-catching and enjoyable style throughout. There is a large amount of natural materials used throughout the villa, with textured walls, warm woods and exposed materials all combining to create a luxury feel.
Balitecture designed River Edge Villa around an open stair set between two white blocks, with deep eaves lined in timber and exposed orange brick at ground level. The stair's concrete treads cantilever from the wall behind a tall screen of timber battens, so the stair stays light and open while the upper rooms keep some privacy from the garden.
The photos of the finished house show how much of it is planted. Banana palms and heliconia crowd the edge of the pool, which is lined in green stone with a raised overflow edge, and a timber deck holds the loungers beneath the stair. Inside, the living room runs long and narrow, with a band of timber boards across the ceiling, bamboo roll blinds over the windows and a long timber desk along the glass. One wall of glass looks into a narrow planted courtyard.
Upstairs, the bedrooms sit under hipped ceilings lined with split bamboo between timber rafters, uplit so the structure glows at night, and a stone bath sits in one of the ensuites. The Tropical Brutalist label comes from the materials, left to show their texture: brick, bamboo, timber and plain white render. Three bedrooms in all, on a 300 square metre plot in Bali.
