Villa Philip

This luxury villa has been created with all of the best tropical brutalist design ideas in mind. The interior of the villa features a central sunken lounge, surrounded by indoor gardens. There is wood throughout the villa to create warmth in every room.

Villa Philip stays on one level, laid out as long pavilions under dark pitched roofs around a central garden on a 630 square metre plot in Bali. From the street the design shows very little: a carport, a white wall and a long planter faced in brick. The rooms all turn inward to the pool.

The pool is the centre of the plan. It is raised and clad in grey stone tiles, broken up by planters with small palms. On one side, a sunken lounge with white bench seating sits against the pool wall, where a glass panel looks into the water. A timber pergola with louvred sides and a glass roof shades part of the deck, and exposed red brick piers frame the glass walls of the house.

Inside, the warmth comes from timber. Dark timber cabinetry runs through the kitchen, which centres on a stone-topped island, and the ceilings carry inset panels of woven rattan in timber frames. The two bedrooms have padded headboards and woven panel walls, and the bathrooms pair pale stone tiles with open timber vanities. The Tropical Brutalist character comes from brick, stone and timber left plain.
