Joanna is drawn as an L-shaped house on two floors, folded around its pool. The upper floor oversails the lower one behind a deep white fascia, and its planted edge lets bougainvillea spill down over the terrace below. Arched windows break up the upper walls, and long runs of sliding glass on both floors sit in slim black frames.

The pool has a shallow sun ledge at one end, with two loungers set into the water, and a white deck between it and the house. Under the overhang, a curved recess in the wall frames a long outdoor sofa. Indoors, the living room steps down into a sunken lounge with a band of light around its base, and once the folding glass wall is pushed back the lounge looks straight down the length of the pool. A long island with timber stools anchors the kitchen, next to the dining table and a stair with a glass balustrade.

Of the five bedrooms, one is set up for children, with bunk beds, a play mat and open shelving. Another has lit, arched niches behind the bed and a mirror with a wavy, organic outline. The bathrooms use floating vanities, warm timber shelving and arched timber doors, and one has a freestanding tub. The palette stays white and beige throughout this Modern Tropical villa in Bali, so the garden on the 414 square metre plot supplies most of the colour.
