Design

Nisi Villas is a Mediterranean-inspired villa development in Bingin, Uluwatu, designed by Balitecture for a client. Whitewashed render and exposed white stone meet flat, white-toned roofs and warm wood interiors, arranged around planted courtyards and a turquoise pool with a glass side that opens onto a sunken outdoor seating area.

The brief was a coastal villa community with a Mediterranean character, a short drive from the surf breaks and clifftop beach clubs of the Bukit peninsula. We drew on the whitewashed walls and arched openings of the Greek islands and adapted them for the tropics: deep eaves for the afternoon rain, semi-open living spaces that stay cool without air-conditioning, and courtyards planted on three sides so every room looks onto green.

The materials carry the design. Rendered white walls bounce the Uluwatu light, exposed natural stone grounds the elevations, and flat, white-toned roofs keep the lines clean and contemporary. Warm wood finishes run through the kitchens and bedrooms, softening all that white. The three-bedroom plan steps around a turquoise pool whose glass side opens the water onto a sunken outdoor seating area, while living and kitchen spaces open completely to the courtyard so the line between house and garden falls away.

Nisi grew into a small resort-style community of Mediterranean villas and suites in Bingin, 13 in total. It was a development project for our client: Balitecture led the architecture and design, and the build was delivered by the client's own team.

  • Warm wood finishes through the kitchens and bedrooms
  • Glass-sided pool linked to a sunken outdoor lounge
  • Planted courtyards on three sides of the plan
  • Semi-open, naturally cross-ventilated living
